About 2–3 cubic feet for ~50 lb of take-home. A lot of kitchen freezers can handle it. Here's the appliance math, packing tips, and when you still want a small chest.
People size the freezer for a quarter.
Then they hear “eighth” and assume they still need a garage appliance and a measuring tape.
You don't.
A Field & Cattle eighth is about 50 lb take-home. That needs about 2–3 cubic feet. Plenty of fridge freezers can take it if you clear the leftover pizza and the bag of peas first.
A tiny dedicated chest makes it easy. A 7-foot garage box is overkill.
Size it before the cold pack shows up. That is the whole game.
Expect about 2–3 cubic feet for a typical ~50 lb eighth.
Ground is about half the box, about 24 lb. Flat vacuum packs stack. See how much ground beef is in an eighth cow and how many steaks in an eighth cow.
The sticker on the appliance is empty volume. Your actual space is whatever is left after the leftover pizza.
An eighth is about 50 lb. That is a pile, not a suggestion. It is also not a quarter. If you clear a shelf or two, a fridge freezer often works. Unlike a quarter.
| Appliance | Typical volume | Eighth (~50 lb) | The honest take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fridge freezer | ~3–5 cu ft | Often yes | Clear leftovers first. Flat packs only. |
| 3–5 cu ft chest | 3–5 cu ft | Easy yes | Dedicated. Empty. Usual starter buy. |
| 5–7 cu ft chest | 5–7 cu ft | Easy, leftover air | Built for a quarter (100–125 lb). |
| Upright 5–7 cu ft | 5–7 cu ft | Fits, less dense | Shelves waste cubes. Still fine for 50 lb. |
If the sticker says 4 cubic feet and you still have a turkey in there, you do not have 4 cubic feet. Empty it, or get the tiny chest.
Same 50 pounds. Different pile. How it is packed decides if 2 cubic feet is realistic or a joke.
Most of an eighth is ground. About 24 lb. Steaks are about 14 lb (13.62 typical). Roasts and other fill the last 11–12 lb. The Field & Cattle eighth is a fixed mix. No cut sheet. You are not swapping chuck into extra burger to change the stack.
| How it's packed | What happens | Space vibe |
|---|---|---|
| 1 lb packs | Lots of small bags. Easy to thaw. Easy to lose. | More air between bags |
| 2 lb packs | The sweet spot for most households. | Stacks cleaner |
| 5 lb bricks | Dense. Pain to thaw for one meal. | Smallest footprint |
| Vacuum-sealed | Flat, stackable, less freezer burn. | Tightest pack |
| Butcher paper | Soft edges. Gaps. Burns faster. | Needs more cubes |
| Bones in | T-bones, short ribs, soup bones. Weird shapes. | Eats corners |
Field & Cattle eighths ship vacuum-sealed. That is why 2–3 cu ft is realistic. Paper wrap and bones eat the cubes you thought you had.
Either works for ~50 lb. This is not the quarter-cow garage decision.
You stack like Tetris. Cold air sits. A 3–5 cu ft box is the easy dedicated move if you want the kitchen freezer back.
Shelves waste cubes. For 50 lb, you still have room. Empty a shelf or two and a fridge freezer works for a lot of households.
A 7-foot garage chest is leftover air. Fine if you already own it. Do not buy one for an eighth.
The sizes stack. The freezer does too. If you were shopping for quarter-cow appliances, this is the smaller alternative.
| Share | Take-home | Freezer | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eighth | ~50 lb | ~2–3 cu ft | First buy. Apartments. Fridge freezer can work. |
| Quarter | 100–125 lb | 5–7 cu ft | Most families. Dedicated chest. |
| Half | 200–250 lb | 8–10 cu ft | Bigger household. Bigger box. |
Quarter math lives in how much freezer space for a quarter cow. If you are still fuzzy on the share itself, start with what is a quarter cow.
Eighth cow is about 50 lb, 100% grass-fed, $749 all-in with shipping (~$14.98–$15/lb). Fixed cut mix. Plan on about 2–3 cubic feet.
Buy the eighth cow share →This is the common failure mode. The box is on the way. You still have a bag of peas and last month's pizza owning the drawer.
Meat does not wait on the porch. You need space that is already at 0°F. Not “I will rearrange it when the driver texts.” Unpack the same day.
Do this the week you order
Organization after it is in the box is a different article. How to store a quarter or half cow covers labels, rotation, and not losing the filets under the burger pile.
