History

Charity Hill Farms is a family-owned farm steeped in history and tradition, operating for over 150 years in Ruther Glen, VA. Owned by the Smith family since 1856, the farm shifted from dairy operations to specialize in beef cattle in 2006. Today, the fifth and sixth generations manage the farm, continuing to honor the rich legacy of their ancestors.

Practices

Charity Hill Farms is committed to sustainable farming practices. All cattle are born, raised, and finished directly on the farm. They utilize a rotational grazing system where cattle primarily graze on grass. During winter months, cattle are fed hay grown entirely on the farm. Additionally, the cattle are finished on an optimal diet of alfalfa and grain also sourced from the farm.

The farm practices 100% no-till farming and cover cropping to maintain soil health. By fencing off ponds and creeks, they ensure clean water access for their cattle. Importantly, Charity Hill Farms is fully compliant with Chesapeake Bay Watershed regulations, underscoring their commitment to environmental stewardship.
