History

Green Gate Farms was established in 2006 by Skip Connett and Erin Flynn. Situated in an underserved neighborhood of East Austin, the farm is anchored by the historic 1902 Bergstrom farmstead. To expand their vision of community-based agriculture, they grew their operations with an additional 30 acres known as the River Farm.

Farming Practices

Green Gate Farms is committed to certified organic farming, focusing on sustainable practices. They grow over 60 varieties of flowers and herbs without synthetic herbicides or pesticides, offering eco-friendly floral arrangements and supporting local organic flower growers.

Community Engagement

The farm is deeply involved in community education and interaction. Through their Workshare program, they offer hands-on learning opportunities where members work four hours weekly in exchange for mentorship and freshly harvested produce. Many past participants have gone on to become local food movement leaders.

Events and Classes

From September to June, Green Gate Farms hosts community events open to all. These include volunteer days, a Saturday farmers market, and various educational classes. Highlights include Organic Flower Design classes and floral jewelry workshops using farm-grown materials. Certain classes may require reservations.

Offerings

The farm provides a variety of certified organic vegetables, herbs, and flowers along with unique products like vase arrangements and flower buckets. They also offer wearable floral jewelry classes. Arrangements come in sustainable packaging, using recycled vases, promoting zero waste.

Visiting and Purchasing

Green Gate Farms is open for visits and offers numerous interactive experiences.
